Supporting recovery, building relationships, and creating opportunities for people to thrive
Mental health affects every community.
It touches individuals, families, workplaces, schools, and neighborhoods regardless of age, profession, or background. While conversations about mental health have become more open in recent years, many people continue to experience challenges quietly, often unsure where to turn or how to begin the journey toward recovery.
Across Contra Costa County, one nonprofit organization has dedicated itself to changing that experience—not simply by providing services, but by building community.
Mental Health Connections believes that recovery begins with connection.
Its mission is reflected in a simple but powerful philosophy: people experiencing mental health challenges deserve more than treatment—they deserve relationships, purpose, dignity, and opportunities to belong.
Today, Mental Health Connections serves as one of Contra Costa County’s important community-based behavioral health organizations, operating programs that help individuals build confidence, independence, and meaningful lives.
Recovery Begins with Human Connection
Mental health recovery is often discussed in terms of healthcare, counseling, or medication.
Mental Health Connections embraces another equally important idea:
People heal better when they feel connected.
Its programs are designed to reduce isolation while creating opportunities for individuals to participate in supportive communities where they can build friendships, develop skills, and rediscover purpose.
Rather than defining individuals by diagnoses, the organization focuses on strengths, abilities, and possibilities.
This person-centered approach has helped shape its reputation throughout Contra Costa County.
Building Purpose Instead of Isolation
Mental Health Connections operates several programs that support adults living with behavioral health challenges.
These include:
- Connections House
- Peer Connections Centers
- Connections Transit Support
Together, these programs provide environments where members—not patients or clients—can participate in meaningful daily activities while building confidence, relationships, and independence. The organization is also a recognized regional leader in the Clubhouse model as a partner in Fountain House United (FHU), a national network advancing mental health recovery.
Instead of focusing only on illness, participants are encouraged to develop strengths, contribute to their community, and move toward personal goals.

A Community-Centered Philosophy
One characteristic that distinguishes Mental Health Connections is its emphasis on community.
Recovery is viewed not as an individual journey alone, but as something strengthened through:
- supportive relationships
- shared experiences
- meaningful work
- opportunities to contribute
Whether members are participating in educational activities, employment support, social events, or peer engagement, the organization seeks to create environments where people feel respected and included.
This philosophy aligns with growing research suggesting that social connection can play an important role in overall well-being.
Leadership That Understands the Journey
Guiding this mission is Michael Dunn, Chief Executive Officer of Mental Health Connections.
Before entering nonprofit leadership, Michael spent approximately twenty-five years in the corporate sector before transitioning into nonprofit service in 2018. His leadership experience includes executive roles in operations, business development, organizational management, and resource development, including serving as CEO of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Contra Costa.
What makes his leadership distinctive is the perspective he brings through personal experience.
Growing up in environments affected by domestic violence, substance abuse, and childhood trauma gave him a deep appreciation for the challenges many individuals face.
Those experiences continue to influence his leadership philosophy: helping people who are often overlooked access opportunities, services, and supportive communities.
His vision includes expanding programs, strengthening partnerships, and increasing resources so Mental Health Connections can serve even more residents throughout Contra Costa County.
Partnerships That Strengthen Communities
No nonprofit works alone.
Mental Health Connections collaborates with community partners, behavioral health organizations, healthcare providers, local governments, volunteers, and supporters to create a broader network of care.
The organization also continues to provide community-based mental health support services in partnership with Contra Costa Behavioral Health.
These partnerships help expand access to resources while creating coordinated support systems for individuals seeking recovery.
Looking Beyond Symptoms
One of the organization’s defining ideas is that recovery involves more than addressing symptoms.
Recovery also involves:
- rebuilding confidence
- developing purpose
- creating friendships
- participating in community life
- discovering new opportunities
When individuals feel connected, many begin to rebuild routines, strengthen relationships, and pursue goals that once seemed out of reach.
This broader understanding of recovery continues to shape the organization’s work.
Investing in the Future
Mental health awareness continues to grow across the United States.
Communities increasingly recognize that supporting behavioral health requires education, compassion, collaboration, and accessible resources.
Organizations like Mental Health Connections demonstrate that lasting progress often happens through everyday interactions—shared conversations, supportive environments, and opportunities for individuals to contribute rather than simply receive services.
As communities continue searching for ways to improve behavioral health outcomes, programs centered on connection, dignity, and inclusion may become increasingly important.
A Vision of Hope
Every nonprofit has a mission.
Some provide housing.
Some provide education.
Some provide healthcare.
Mental Health Connections focuses on something even more fundamental:
Helping people reconnect—with themselves, with others, and with the community around them.
That mission extends beyond buildings or programs.
It represents the belief that every individual deserves the opportunity to live with purpose, dignity, and hope.
A Question Worth Thinking About
