John D. Sensiba: A Legacy of Leadership That Builds Communities

From business and healthcare to philanthropy and community service, John Sensiba’s leadership demonstrates how professional expertise can become a force for lasting local impact.

Leadership can be measured in many ways.

For some, it is reflected in the organizations they build. For others, it is found in the difficult decisions they make when circumstances demand change. And sometimes leadership becomes most visible through what happens years later—when an institution, organization, or community is stronger because someone was willing to step forward.

For John D. Sensiba, Partner at Sensiba, leadership has extended far beyond accounting and business.

Over several decades, his professional expertise has intersected with healthcare, education, economic development, philanthropy, and community service throughout California’s Tri-Valley.

His story is one of turning ideas into impact—and demonstrating that business leadership and community leadership do not have to exist separately.

Building a Business Around More Than Business

John Sensiba built his professional career in accounting, tax advisory, and business consulting. A graduate of San Jose State University and a California CPA, he became managing partner of the accounting and consulting firm that carries his family name.

His leadership philosophy, however, has extended beyond traditional measures of business success.

Sensiba has publicly advocated for organizational cultures that consider employees, communities, sustainability, and long-term impact alongside financial performance.

That philosophy has helped shape the firm’s evolution. Sensiba has emphasized leadership development, workplace flexibility, sustainability, and the idea that businesses can use their influence to create positive impact.

The result offers a broader lesson about innovation: innovation does not always mean inventing a new technology. Sometimes it means questioning the way an organization has traditionally operated and finding a better approach.

A Defining Moment for Tri-Valley Healthcare

Perhaps one of the most consequential chapters of Sensiba’s community leadership came through healthcare.

He joined the board of ValleyCare Health System and eventually became its board chair during an extraordinarily challenging period for the local healthcare organization.

ValleyCare faced significant financial pressures and needed a sustainable path forward.

Sensiba’s accounting and financial background became particularly valuable as the board evaluated difficult choices about the organization’s future.

Under his board leadership, ValleyCare ultimately pursued an affiliation with Stanford Health Care.

The affiliation, completed in 2015, connected the Tri-Valley’s community hospital system with Stanford while creating a path for continued investment in healthcare services in the region.

For Pleasanton and surrounding communities, the significance went far beyond a business transaction. It helped establish what eventually became Stanford Health Care Tri-Valley, bringing the resources and capabilities of a major academic healthcare system into the region while maintaining an important local healthcare presence.

Sensiba continued serving the healthcare organization after the affiliation.

In 2026, after more than 17 years of board service spanning ValleyCare and Stanford Health Care Tri-Valley, his tenure came to a close.

The organization marked the occasion with an extraordinary recognition: its boardroom was named in his honor.

It was a fitting acknowledgement of a leader whose involvement helped guide the organization through one of the most significant transitions in its history.

Recognition From the Community

Sensiba’s contributions have been recognized repeatedly by organizations throughout Pleasanton and the Tri-Valley.

In 2015, Pleasanton Mayor Jerry Thorne presented him with the Mayor’s Award for his community service.

That same year, the Pleasanton Weekly selected him as its Man of the Year, highlighting his leadership during the ValleyCare transition.

He has also received the Ed Kinney Community Patriot Award, recognizing individuals who have made meaningful contributions to Pleasanton.

Other honors over the years have reflected contributions spanning business leadership, community involvement, and service.

Yet viewed together, the recognitions tell a larger story.

They demonstrate what can happen when someone brings professional skills into community service rather than keeping the two worlds separate.

From Healthcare to Regional Innovation

Sensiba has also played an important role in conversations about the Tri-Valley’s economic future.

He served as founding chairman of the Innovation Tri-Valley Leadership Group, an organization bringing together leaders from business, research, education, and government to strengthen the region’s innovation economy.

The Tri-Valley occupies a distinctive position in Northern California. It combines major research institutions, technology companies, established businesses, educational institutions, and growing communities.

Creating connections among those groups requires collaboration.

Sensiba’s involvement reflects a recurring theme throughout his career: bringing different people and organizations together around common objectives.

Investing in the Community’s Future

Education has been another significant area of service.

Over the years, Sensiba has been involved with organizations and initiatives including the Las Positas College Foundation, the college’s Presidential Advisory Council, and committees supporting the Pleasanton Unified School District.

He has also remained involved with the Pleasanton Chamber of Commerce, where he previously served as board chair, and with the Rotary Club of Pleasanton.

These roles span different institutions, but they share a common purpose: strengthening the community infrastructure that allows people and organizations to succeed.

Building a Culture of Local Philanthropy

More recently, Sensiba became one of the founding leaders behind the Three Valleys Community Foundation (3VCF).

The foundation was established to encourage philanthropy and connect charitable resources with community needs throughout the Tri-Valley.

Sensiba serves as chair of its board.

The concept behind a community foundation is powerful: prosperity within a region can become a resource for strengthening that same region.

Rather than focusing on one particular cause, a community foundation can help donors support a broad range of needs—from education and healthcare to housing, nonprofit capacity, and other community priorities.

For Sensiba, the effort represents another extension of a philosophy visible throughout his career: successful communities become stronger when people invest back into them.

Leadership Through Service

One photograph from Sensiba’s community journey captures him helping serve a holiday dinner to seniors through his Rotary club—and taking a lighthearted break to sit on Santa’s lap.

Another records his recognition with the Community Patriot Award.

Another captures the ribbon-cutting connected with ValleyCare’s affiliation with Stanford.

Together, these moments tell a story that a résumé alone cannot.

Leadership can happen in a boardroom while navigating a complex healthcare transition.

It can happen while building a business.

But it can also happen while serving dinner, supporting a school, helping a nonprofit, mentoring another leader, or simply showing up when the community needs volunteers.

Turning Ideas Into Impact

Innovation is sometimes associated exclusively with technology.

Sensiba’s journey suggests a broader definition.

Innovation can mean finding a sustainable future for a community hospital.

It can mean bringing business and research leaders together to strengthen a regional economy.

It can mean creating new approaches to corporate culture.

And it can mean building philanthropic institutions that may serve a community for generations.

The common thread is turning ideas into action.

That may ultimately be one of the most important characteristics of leadership: not simply recognizing what could be better, but helping people work together to make it happen.

A Legacy Still Being Written

After decades of involvement in the Tri-Valley, John Sensiba’s influence can be seen across organizations that touch many aspects of community life.

Business.

Healthcare.

Education.

Economic development.

Philanthropy.

Community service.

The individual accomplishments are significant, but perhaps the larger lesson comes from how they connect.

Professional success can create expertise, relationships, and resources. Community leadership provides an opportunity to put those assets to work for something larger.

John D. Sensiba’s story demonstrates what can happen when the two come together.

A Question Worth Thinking About

A successful career can be measured by titles, organizations built, financial accomplishments, and professional recognition.

But should leadership ultimately be measured by something more?

What do you think?

Should successful professionals have a responsibility to use some of their experience and leadership to strengthen the communities where they live?

And when you eventually look back on your own career, what impact would you like to have left behind?

Tell us in the comments section below. Your perspective may inspire someone else to turn their own ideas, experience, and success into meaningful community impact.
