How the President & CEO of Valley Humane Society is helping strengthen animal welfare, community engagement, and advocacy across California
Some leaders build organizations. Others build communities.
For Melanie Sadek, President and CEO of Valley Humane Society, the mission has always been about helping those who are often unable to speak for themselves. Whether advocating for highway safety, supporting families, or improving the lives of companion animals, Sadek has spent her career creating programs, partnerships, and opportunities that make a lasting difference.
Her journey reflects a belief that strong communities are built through compassion, collaboration, and a willingness to serve.
Today, under her leadership, Valley Humane Society has become one of the Tri-Valley’s most visible and respected animal welfare organizations, helping pets and people alike while promoting responsible animal care and community engagement.
A Career Built on Service
Before entering the animal welfare field, Sadek developed a strong foundation in corporate and nonprofit leadership. She spent years working in corporate and small-business management, including serving as manager of the traffic safety department for the California State Automobile Association (CSAA).
In that role, she helped develop education and outreach programs, build volunteer coalitions, support governmental affairs initiatives, and evaluate nonprofit funding requests. These experiences taught her the importance of community partnerships, strategic communication, and public engagement.
In 2007, she opened Murphy’s Paw, a pet supply store in downtown Pleasanton. The business quickly became known within the community and helped strengthen her connection to local pet owners and animal advocates. After successfully building the business and establishing strong community support, she transitioned ownership in 2011 and began the next chapter of her professional journey.

Leading Valley Humane Society
As President and CEO of Valley Humane Society, Sadek has helped elevate the organization’s visibility and impact throughout the Tri-Valley region.
Founded in 1987, Valley Humane Society has worked to improve the lives of companion animals through adoption services, veterinary care, volunteer programs, foster programs, and community education. Under Sadek’s leadership, the organization has expanded its role as both an animal welfare organization and a community resource.
Her leadership style emphasizes collaboration, education, and long-term solutions. Rather than focusing solely on shelter operations, she has often spoken about the importance of helping people and pets remain together whenever possible, supporting responsible pet ownership, and encouraging community involvement in animal welfare.
Advocating Beyond the Shelter
One of the photos submitted for this feature captures Sadek in Sacramento during a statewide nonprofit recognition event held at the California State Capitol.
The image reflects an important aspect of her work that often occurs outside the public eye: advocacy.
Strong nonprofit organizations frequently engage with policymakers and community leaders to help address challenges affecting the populations they serve. For animal welfare organizations, this can involve discussions about public policy, animal protection, community resources, and responsible care initiatives.
Working alongside nonprofit leaders, elected officials, and community advocates, Sadek continues to support efforts that strengthen both nonprofit organizations and the communities they serve.

Community Partnerships Matter
A recurring theme throughout Sadek’s career is partnership.
Whether working with volunteers, elected officials, donors, veterinary professionals, or community members, she understands that lasting impact rarely comes from one person or one organization alone.
A submitted photograph featuring Valley Humane Society board members reflects the collaborative culture that helps drive the organization forward. Behind every successful nonprofit are individuals who contribute their expertise, time, and resources to a shared mission.
These partnerships help organizations navigate challenges, expand services, and create meaningful opportunities for engagement.
Veterinary Care and Lifesaving Services
Another submitted photo features Sadek with Hall of Fame baseball manager Tony La Russa at Valley Humane Society’s Phil Scholz Veterinary Surgery Center in Pleasanton.
The image highlights the role veterinary care plays in modern animal welfare.
Access to affordable veterinary services can have a significant impact on animal health and well-being. Through programs like the veterinary surgery center, organizations can help pets receive care while supporting families and reducing barriers to responsible pet ownership.
These types of services demonstrate how animal welfare organizations often contribute not only to the lives of animals but also to the people who care for them.
The Importance of Family
Leadership and community service are important parts of Sadek’s story, but so is family.
One of the submitted photographs features her immediate family. While names are intentionally omitted for privacy, the image reflects something that many community leaders understand well: meaningful work is often grounded in personal values and relationships.
Family, community, and service are not separate parts of life—they often influence and strengthen one another.
For many nonprofit leaders, the motivation to improve the world around them begins with a desire to create a better future for the people, animals, and communities they care about most.
Recognized for Community Impact
Sadek’s commitment to service has not gone unnoticed.
In 2016, she received the Tri-Valley Hero Community Spirit Award, recognizing her dedication to both public safety and animal welfare. The recognition reflected years of work focused on supporting vulnerable populations and strengthening the community through education, advocacy, and service.
While awards acknowledge accomplishments, her ongoing work suggests that the mission continues. Whether helping pets find homes, advocating for animal welfare, supporting nonprofit initiatives, or building community partnerships, Sadek remains focused on creating positive outcomes for both animals and people.
Looking Ahead
The challenges facing communities continue to evolve, and so do the organizations working to address them.
Animal welfare today extends far beyond shelter walls. It includes education, veterinary care, responsible ownership, advocacy, and community collaboration. Leaders like Melanie Sadek demonstrate how nonprofit organizations can adapt to changing needs while remaining grounded in their mission.
Her story is ultimately one of service, leadership, and compassion—a reminder that meaningful impact often comes from people who dedicate themselves to helping others.
As communities continue to grow and change, the work of organizations like Valley Humane Society—and the individuals who lead them—will continue to play an important role in building a future where both people and animals can thrive.
