Steve McCoy-Thompson: Building Stronger Communities Through Service and Leadership

How a lifelong commitment to community, education, housing, and philanthropy is helping shape the future of the Tri-Valley and beyond

Some people spend their careers building companies. Others dedicate themselves to building communities.

For Steve McCoy-Thompson, community building has become a lifelong mission.

Over the course of three decades, Steve has worked across the business, government, education, and nonprofit sectors, helping organizations strengthen their impact and creating opportunities for people to thrive. Whether supporting educational initiatives, advancing philanthropy, expanding housing solutions, or mentoring nonprofit leaders around the world, his work reflects a consistent commitment to service.

Today, Steve continues to lead initiatives that improve lives locally and globally while helping communities address some of their most pressing challenges.

A Career Spanning Business, Government, and Community Service

Steve’s professional journey is unusually diverse.

He has held leadership roles in both the private and nonprofit sectors, providing him with a unique perspective on how organizations can create meaningful change.

During his corporate career, Steve served in senior positions with major organizations including Bechtel Corporation and Deloitte Consulting. His work took him to more than 50 countries, where he provided management consulting services to corporations, governments, and institutions.

These experiences allowed him to see firsthand how leadership, collaboration, and innovation can influence communities across different cultures and regions.

From long-term engagements in China and India to projects in West Africa, Steve developed a global understanding of economic development, organizational leadership, and community engagement.

Yet despite his international experience, community service close to home remained a central focus.

Strengthening Education and Opportunity

Steve has long believed that education is one of the most powerful tools for creating opportunity.

He served as Executive Director of Pleasanton Partnerships in Education Foundation (PPIE), an organization dedicated to supporting educational excellence for students throughout the Pleasanton Unified School District.

During his tenure, he worked with educators, parents, business leaders, and community members to strengthen resources and opportunities for students.

Education continues to be a recurring theme throughout his work, including his support of programs that encourage youth leadership and civic engagement.

One such initiative is the Junior Journalist Program, which empowers students to investigate important community issues and engage in meaningful storytelling.

By encouraging young people to ask questions, conduct research, and communicate effectively, the program helps prepare future leaders while strengthening civic awareness.

Co-Founding a Legacy of Community Giving

Among Steve’s most significant community contributions is his role as Co-Founder of the Three Valleys Community Foundation (3VCF).

Established to serve the Tri-Valley region, 3VCF helps connect charitable resources with community needs and supports initiatives that improve quality of life across the region.

Community foundations often serve as catalysts for local impact, bringing together donors, nonprofits, businesses, and civic leaders around shared goals.

Steve helped lay the foundation for an organization that continues to support causes ranging from education and housing to health and community development.

His leadership helped establish a model that encourages long-term philanthropy and local engagement.

In recognition of his contributions to the region, Steve has received community honors and recognition for his service and leadership.

Addressing Housing Challenges Through Innovation

One issue that has become increasingly important in communities throughout California is housing.

Steve has been involved in efforts that explore innovative approaches to addressing housing needs, including work with Keystone Housing Foundation.

The organization focuses on creating tiny home solutions for veterans and others facing housing insecurity.

Tiny home communities have attracted growing interest as communities search for practical and compassionate housing solutions.

Through open houses and community engagement efforts, these projects help demonstrate how housing innovation can support individuals while fostering dignity, stability, and connection.

For Steve, housing is not simply about buildings—it is about creating opportunities for people to rebuild their lives and become part of supportive communities.

Supporting Nonprofit Leaders Around the World

Steve’s impact extends well beyond the Tri-Valley.

Today he is actively involved with Gratitude Network, an organization that helps nonprofit leaders scale their impact and expand their ability to serve children and youth.

Through fellowships, mentoring, and leadership development, Gratitude Network supports social impact organizations working across multiple countries and communities.

Collectively, these organizations serve millions of children and young people around the world.

This work aligns closely with Steve’s longstanding belief that effective leadership can multiply positive impact far beyond what any single individual or organization can accomplish alone.

Leadership Through Service

One characteristic that consistently appears throughout Steve’s career is service.

He has served on numerous community initiatives and advisory efforts, including participation on the Economic Vitality Committee for the City of Pleasanton.

His work reflects a philosophy that leadership is not simply about authority—it is about helping others succeed.

Whether mentoring nonprofit leaders, supporting educational programs, or contributing to community development projects, he has consistently focused on collaboration and shared success.

A Lifelong Learner

Steve’s educational background reflects his commitment to learning and global understanding.

He earned a Master’s degree from Tufts University and graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Duke University.

His studies also included academic experiences at Beijing University and Nanjing University, providing additional international perspective that would later influence his professional work.

In addition to his leadership and community involvement, Steve has authored four books covering a variety of topics, further demonstrating his interest in sharing knowledge and ideas.

Building Community at Home

Despite a career that has taken him around the world, Steve has remained deeply connected to the Tri-Valley community.

For nearly three decades, Pleasanton has been home.

Throughout that time, he has helped strengthen educational institutions, nonprofit organizations, housing initiatives, and philanthropic efforts that continue to benefit the region today.

His story demonstrates that meaningful impact often comes from connecting people, organizations, and ideas around a common purpose.

Looking Ahead

Communities continue to face new challenges and opportunities.

Education, housing, philanthropy, economic development, and youth leadership remain important issues for the future.

Leaders like Steve McCoy-Thompson remind us that sustainable progress often happens through collaboration, service, and long-term commitment.

Whether working with local nonprofits, supporting future leaders, or helping communities address critical needs, his work reflects a simple but powerful belief:

Strong communities are built when people invest in one another.
