55. How to Explain What Makes a Business Different
Every business needs a clear way to explain why customers should consider it instead of other available options. However, being different does not require claiming to be the best, cheapest, fastest, or most innovative. A meaningful distinction may come from whom the business serves, how it delivers its services, the expertise of its team, the experience it creates, or the specific problem it solves.
Understand What Customers Actually Value
A business should begin by identifying what matters most to its intended customers. Depending on the industry, customers may value convenience, specialized knowledge, product quality, responsiveness, customization, accessibility, reliability, cultural understanding, local experience, or continuing support.
The strongest differentiators connect directly to a customer need. “We care about our customers” is too general because nearly every business can make the same statement. A more useful explanation might describe how quickly inquiries are answered, how services are customized, how customers are kept informed, or how the company handles concerns.
Customer interviews, reviews, surveys, sales conversations, and feedback from employees can help reveal why people select the business and why they return.
Be Specific About the Difference
General words such as “quality,” “service,” “innovation,” and “excellence” become more persuasive when supported by examples. A manufacturer might explain its testing process. A restaurant could describe its regional recipes or locally sourced ingredients. A consultant might focus on experience within a particular industry. A home-services company could explain how it provides written estimates and progress updates.
A business may also be different because it serves a clearly defined audience. For example, an accounting firm might specialize in restaurants, a real estate professional may focus on relocation clients, or a technology company could design tools specifically for small organizations.
The goal is not to list every possible strength. Businesses should identify two or three distinctions that are relevant, credible, and easy to remember.
Support the Message with Evidence
A differentiating claim becomes stronger when the business can demonstrate it. Evidence may include professional qualifications, years of relevant experience, customer-retention data, documented processes, product testing, case studies, verified reviews, awards, certifications, or specific service policies.
Claims such as “number one,” “industry-leading,” “only,” “safest,” or “most trusted” should not be used without reliable support. Businesses should also avoid criticizing competitors or making comparisons they cannot verify. A clear explanation of the company’s own value is usually more effective than attempting to diminish others.
Keep the Message Consistent
Once a business identifies its meaningful differences, it should communicate them consistently across its website, interviews, social media, presentations, sales materials, and employee conversations. The wording may change for different audiences, but the central message should remain recognizable.
Most importantly, the customer experience must support the promise. A distinction that exists only in marketing language will not build lasting trust.
