Thank You 2: Call Someone Who Helped You
Think of someone whose help made a difference in your life. Perhaps a friend drove you to an appointment, a colleague helped you meet a deadline, a relative supported you during a difficult period, or a mentor offered advice that you still use. Call the person and thank them directly.
You do not need a special occasion or a long speech. Begin simply: “I was thinking about the time you helped me, and I wanted to thank you.” Mention what the person did and why you still remember it. If the help occurred years ago, hearing that it remained meaningful may be especially touching.
Before calling, consider whether it is a convenient time. If the person does not answer, leave a short message or ask when it would be suitable to talk. Respect the person’s time and do not turn the conversation into a request for another favor.
Purpose: A sincere phone call allows gratitude to be heard in your voice. It can also restore a connection that has become distant and reassure someone that their effort was noticed and remembered.
A humble approach: Let the call remain a simple expression of appreciation. Do not use it to seek reassurance, revive an obligation, or remind the person of something you did for them. If the person responds briefly or seems uncomfortable receiving praise, accept that graciously. Your purpose is to say thank you, not to require a particular reaction.
