Thank You 15: Thank Someone Who Believed in You Before You Believed in Yourself
Think of a person who recognized your potential when you were uncertain. This might be a friend, relative, teacher, mentor, supervisor, coach, colleague, or community member. Perhaps the person encouraged you to apply for an opportunity, continue after a setback, learn a skill, speak publicly, start a project, or trust your own judgment.
Tell the person what you remember and how their confidence influenced you. For example: “When I was ready to give up, you reminded me that one difficult result did not define what I could do. I carried those words with me, and I wanted to thank you.”
Be truthful about the person’s contribution without suggesting that they are responsible for every later success. Your choices, efforts, circumstances, and the support of others may also have played important roles.
Purpose: Encouragement can alter the direction of a life even when the person offering it never sees the outcome. Expressing gratitude closes that gap and shows that their words or actions continued to matter.
A humble approach: Share your progress without turning the message into a display of achievements. Do not ask the person to praise you again or confirm that they were right about you. Thank them for the confidence they offered, acknowledge it sincerely, and allow the message to remain a gift rather than a request for more encouragement.
