Thank You 41: Give a Family Caregiver Time Away From Their Responsibilities
If a trusted family member or friend regularly cares for a child, older adult, person with a disability, or someone with medical needs, ask whether a safe and practical form of relief would help. This might involve preparing meals, handling errands, completing household tasks, or staying with the person receiving care if you are qualified and authorized to do so.
Do not assume caregiving responsibilities you are not trained to manage. Learn about routines, medication restrictions, emergency contacts, privacy needs, and the preferences of the person receiving care. In some situations, professional respite care may be the safest option.
Ask the caregiver what would genuinely reduce their workload. They may prefer help with laundry or grocery shopping rather than leaving the home.
Purpose: Caregivers are often thanked with words while continuing to carry nearly every responsibility. Practical relief recognizes their effort and may give them time to rest, attend an appointment, or complete a personal task.
A humble approach: Respect the dignity and choices of both the caregiver and the person receiving care. Do not publicize the family’s circumstances or describe yourself as rescuing them. Offer only what you can provide safely and consistently, without creating pressure to accept.
