Thank You 9: Write a Positive Review for a Small Business
If a local business, independent professional, restaurant, shop, or service provider treated you well, write an honest review on an appropriate platform. Describe what was helpful, such as dependable service, clear communication, careful work, accessibility, patience, or a welcoming atmosphere.
Keep the review truthful and based on your own experience. Specific details are more useful than broad claims such as “the best business ever.” Do not disclose an employee’s private information, identify other customers, or include photographs without permission. If you received a discount, free product, or another benefit connected to the review, disclose that relationship where required.
You can also send a private note to the business owner or manager recognizing an employee who served you well. A sincere compliment may contribute to that employee’s professional recognition.
Purpose: A thoughtful review can help other customers make informed decisions and allow a responsible small business to be discovered. It also tells the people doing the work which parts of their service were especially appreciated.
A humble approach: Write the review as a genuine thank-you, not as leverage for future discounts, upgrades, or special treatment. Do not tell the business that it “owes” you because you posted something positive. Offer honest appreciation and let the business decide whether or how to respond.
