Thank You 8: Recognize a Colleague Who Works Behind the Scenes
Think about someone whose work helps others succeed but is rarely visible. This might be an administrative professional, technical-support employee, scheduler, facilities worker, editor, bookkeeper, coordinator, or colleague who quietly resolves problems before others notice them.
Thank the person directly and describe the contribution you appreciate. You might say, “Your careful preparation keeps our meetings organized,” or “I appreciate how quickly you help when the team has a technical problem.” If appropriate, you may also send a brief note to the person’s manager so that the contribution is recognized professionally. Be accurate and do not exaggerate.
Make sure your appreciation is respectful and does not imply that the person’s work is surprising or less important than more visible roles. Learn and use the person’s correct name and title.
Purpose: Behind-the-scenes work is often noticed only when something goes wrong. Thoughtful recognition helps people understand that their consistency, skill, and reliability are valued.
A humble approach: Offer appreciation without acting as though you are granting the person importance. Avoid turning the compliment into a public performance or taking credit for “discovering” their contribution. If you inform a supervisor, do it because the employee deserves recognition—not because you want to be seen giving it.
