Thank You 7: Thank a Teacher Who Made a Lasting Difference
Contact a current or former teacher, professor, tutor, coach, or instructor whose guidance influenced you. Explain what you learned and how it helped you. You might mention a lesson that shaped your career, encouragement that strengthened your confidence, or patience that helped you understand a difficult subject.
Even if many years have passed, you may be able to send a note through the school, college, professional organization, or another appropriate public contact channel. Respect personal boundaries and do not search for private information or repeatedly contact someone who does not respond.
A message might say, “You may not remember me, but I have always remembered how you encouraged me to keep writing. That confidence stayed with me and influenced choices I made later. I wanted to thank you for taking my work seriously.”
Purpose: Educators do not always learn what happens to the people they teach. A specific message can show that their work continued to matter long after a class, season, or training program ended.
A humble approach: Make the message about the educator’s contribution rather than using it primarily to describe your accomplishments. Do not ask for a recommendation, introduction, or favor in the same note. Allow the thank-you to be complete on its own, whether or not you receive a reply.
