Thank You 3: Help Your Father With Something He Usually Handles Alone
If you have a safe and positive relationship with your father or a father figure, notice a task he regularly manages by himself. It might involve household maintenance, paperwork, technology, transportation, shopping, organizing, gardening, or preparing for a family gathering. Offer to help without suggesting that he is incapable of doing it.
Be specific rather than saying, “Let me know if you need anything.” You might ask, “Would it be helpful if I organized these documents with you?” or “Can I take care of that errand this week?” If he declines, respect his answer. The offer itself can communicate that you notice and appreciate what he does.
This idea can also be adapted for a stepfather, grandfather, uncle, guardian, mentor, or another person who has provided fatherly support. No reader should feel obligated to contact a parent when the relationship is harmful, unsafe, or unwanted.
Purpose: Practical help can express gratitude for the many ordinary responsibilities that often go unnoticed. Sharing one task may give someone time to rest and show that their continuing effort is valued.
A humble approach: Help in the way the person actually wants, not the way that earns you the most praise. Avoid announcing what you did to other relatives or expecting special recognition. Complete the task carefully, and allow the assistance to speak for itself.
