Community Action 120: Help Organize a Community Sustainability Project
The Idea: Work with residents, businesses, schools, nonprofits, public agencies, or other local groups on a clearly defined environmental project.
Why It Matters: Collaborative projects can address needs that individuals may not be able to manage alone, such as waste reduction, water conservation, tree care, habitat improvement, community gardens, energy education, or sustainable transportation.
Try It Today: Identify one specific local need and speak with the organization or agency that has responsibility, expertise, or authority in that area.
Make It Work for You: Define the project’s purpose, scope, leadership, permissions, budget, insurance, accessibility, safety procedures, environmental effects, volunteer roles, communications, and maintenance responsibilities. Consult qualified experts when necessary. Do not make changes to public land, waterways, infrastructure, wildlife habitat, or protected vegetation without authorization.
Take It Further: Begin with a manageable pilot project, establish measurable goals, report results honestly, gather participant feedback, and create a realistic plan for long-term care.
