Community Action 228: Volunteer with a Disability-Service Organization
The Idea: Support an established organization that serves, represents, or is led by people with disabilities.
Why It Matters: Disability-service and disability-rights organizations may provide advocacy, recreation, independent-living support, employment assistance, education, transportation resources, assistive technology, and community connection.
Try It Today: Contact a reputable local organization and ask about current volunteer roles, training, screening, accessibility, and time commitments.
Make It Work for You: Follow the organization’s policies concerning confidentiality, boundaries, physical assistance, communication, transportation, personal care, photographs, emergencies, and mandatory reporting. Speak directly to the person receiving support rather than automatically addressing a companion. Do not touch a person, wheelchair, service animal, mobility aid, or communication device without permission.
Take It Further: Support work identified as valuable by people with disabilities, advocate for accessible community programs, or contribute professional skills through a clearly defined volunteer role.
Community Connection: Disability inclusion, independent living, respectful service, and accessible communities
