Community Action 180: Organize a Community Potluck Respectfully
The Idea: Bring residents together for a shared meal in which participants may voluntarily contribute appropriate dishes.
Why It Matters: A well-planned potluck can encourage conversation, hospitality, cultural exchange, neighbor relationships, and a greater sense of belonging.
Try It Today: Choose an authorized, accessible location and invite participants to sign up for dishes or supplies without making contribution a condition of attendance.
Make It Work for You: Address food safety, refrigeration, heating, serving utensils, hand hygiene, allergens, dietary needs, religious practices, labeling, alcohol rules, capacity, cleanup, waste, accessibility, and venue requirements. Never guarantee that homemade food is allergen-free. Do not pressure participants to bring food associated with their perceived culture or criticize dishes that are unfamiliar to you.
Take It Further: Partner with an established community organization, provide commercially prepared alternatives, reduce food waste, collect optional recipes with permission, and invite participants to share the meaning of a dish if they wish.
Community Connection: Shared meals, cultural exchange, neighbor relationships, and inclusive hospitality
