The Idea: Learn what nonprofit board membership requires before applying for, accepting, or recommending a board position.
Why It Matters: Board members may carry significant duties involving governance, mission oversight, finances, legal compliance, executive supervision, risk, strategy, fundraising, and public trust.
Try It Today: Review the organization’s mission, governing documents, financial reports, board expectations, meeting schedule, policies, programs, and current challenges.
Make It Work for You: Understand applicable duties of care, loyalty, and obedience, along with conflict-of-interest, confidentiality, attendance, fundraising, insurance, and personal-contribution expectations. Ask whether the organization is in good standing and how the board handles financial controls, complaints, executive evaluation, legal obligations, and succession. Do not join solely for prestige, access, sales opportunities, or publicity. Board members generally govern collectively and should not independently direct staff or speak for the organization without authority.
