Community Action 99: Learn Your Community’s Recycling Rules

The Idea: Review the official recycling instructions that apply to your home, workplace, school, or residential building.

Why It Matters: Recycling programs differ by location and service provider. Placing unsuitable or contaminated materials in a recycling container can interfere with sorting, increase costs, create hazards, or cause otherwise recyclable material to be discarded.

Try It Today: Visit your city’s, county’s, building’s, or waste provider’s official website and check how to handle several items you commonly discard.

Make It Work for You: Confirm rules for containers, lids, plastic bags, food residue, cardboard, glass, batteries, electronics, paint, medications, chemicals, propane cylinders, sharp objects, and other special waste. Do not rely on packaging symbols alone, because an item labeled recyclable may not be accepted locally. Never place hazardous or combustible materials in a curbside recycling bin unless explicitly authorized.

Take It Further: Post a simple household sorting guide near your bins and locate official drop-off or collection programs for items that require special handling.

Community Connection: Waste reduction, environmental education, public safety, and responsible recycling
