Community Action 333: Encourage Giving Without Pressuring Others
The Idea: Share charitable opportunities in a way that allows people to decide freely whether, how, and how much they wish to contribute.
Why It Matters: People have different financial circumstances, priorities, beliefs, personal experiences, and existing commitments that may not be publicly visible.
Try It Today: When sharing a fundraiser, provide accurate information and use language such as “if you are interested and able” rather than implying an obligation.
Make It Work for You: Avoid public donation comparisons, repeated personal requests, guilt, workplace pressure, political assumptions, or demands that people explain why they declined. Be clear about the organizer, beneficiary, use of funds, fees, deadlines, and whether gifts are tax-deductible. Never publish donor names or contribution amounts without permission. Nonfinancial participation, private giving, and choosing not to participate are all valid.
