Community Action 323: Help a Family Celebrate a Holiday Respectfully
The Idea: Support a family’s holiday celebration through an established organization that understands the family’s preferences, traditions, and circumstances.
Why It Matters: Thoughtful assistance may help families enjoy meaningful traditions during periods of financial hardship, displacement, illness, or other difficulty.
Try It Today: Ask a school, nonprofit, shelter, faith community, family resource center, or social-service organization about an authorized holiday assistance program.
Make It Work for You: Follow the family’s requested wish list and respect religious, cultural, dietary, accessibility, age, and privacy considerations. Provide new and appropriate items when required. Do not expect personal contact, photographs, public thanks, access to children, or details about the family’s circumstances. Avoid imposing your own traditions or using assistance to promote religious, political, commercial, or personal interests.
Take It Further: Contribute flexible gift cards, culturally appropriate food, wrapping supplies, transportation assistance, or unrestricted funds that allow trained staff to respond to individual needs.
Community Connection: Holiday assistance, family dignity, cultural respect, and compassionate giving
