Community Action 230: Improve Accessibility at a Community Gathering
The Idea: Identify and reduce barriers that may prevent people with disabilities, older adults, caregivers, and others from participating fully in a community event.
Why It Matters: Accessibility affects whether people can enter, understand, navigate, hear, see, communicate, participate, and leave an event safely.
Try It Today: Review the venue and event plan for accessible routes, entrances, seating, restrooms, parking, transportation, registration, presentations, and emergency procedures.
Make It Work for You: Provide accurate accessibility information in advance and a clear accommodation-request process. Consider captioning, interpretation, assistive-listening systems, service animals, dietary needs, quiet spaces, lighting, stage access, mobility-device space, and companion seating. Do not claim that an event is fully accessible without verifying the experience, and do not require participants to disclose more personal information than necessary.
Take It Further: Invite people with varied disabilities to conduct a paid or appropriately recognized accessibility review and incorporate their feedback into future events.
