Community Action 259: Serve on a Nonprofit Committee
The Idea: Contribute your experience to a defined committee supporting a nonprofit’s programs, events, finance, governance, fundraising, communications, facilities, or community outreach.
Why It Matters: Effective committees can help organizations examine issues carefully, distribute work, involve varied perspectives, and prepare responsible recommendations.
Try It Today: Ask a nonprofit about current committee openings, responsibilities, meeting schedules, expected work, and term length.
Make It Work for You: Understand whether the committee advises staff, reports to the board, or has delegated authority. Review confidentiality, conflicts of interest, attendance, voting, fundraising, records, and communication requirements. Disclose relevant personal or business interests and distinguish your individual opinion from an authorized organizational position. Committee membership should not be used to obtain contracts, private information, special access, or personal publicity.
Take It Further: Review the committee charter, prepare for meetings, complete assigned work, evaluate results, and help recruit members with needed perspectives and skills.
