Community Action 173: Celebrate Immigrant Contributions
The Idea: Recognize the ways immigrants contribute to local businesses, schools, healthcare, technology, agriculture, arts, public service, neighborhoods, and community organizations.
Why It Matters: Immigrant residents bring skills, knowledge, traditions, entrepreneurship, professional expertise, languages, relationships, and experiences that help communities develop and thrive.
Try It Today: Learn about and appropriately acknowledge one immigrant-owned business, professional, artist, educator, volunteer, or community organization.
Make It Work for You: Obtain permission before sharing anyone’s immigration story, country of origin, legal status, family history, photograph, or personal challenges. Avoid reducing people to inspirational narratives or assuming that all immigrants share the same experiences. Recognition should be accurate, voluntary, and centered on the person’s actual work and contributions.
Take It Further: Support an immigrant-led organization, attend a public cultural or business program, or create an authorized storytelling opportunity that protects participants’ choices and privacy.
