Community Action 239: Include Homebound Residents in Community Activities
The Idea: Create suitable ways for residents who cannot easily leave home to participate in community, cultural, educational, faith-based, civic, or social activities.
Why It Matters: Homebound residents may experience isolation and limited access to information, relationships, recreation, and opportunities to contribute.
Try It Today: Ask a homebound community member whether they would value a telephone conversation, livestream, mailed activity, remote discussion, authorized visit, or another participation option.
Make It Work for You: Respect privacy, energy levels, health needs, technology preferences, visitor restrictions, and the right to decline. Obtain permission before sharing names, images, addresses, or circumstances. Do not make medical assumptions or treat remote participation as a complete substitute for accessible in-person options. Follow appropriate safeguarding procedures for volunteers and vulnerable participants.
Take It Further: Add telephone access, captions, recordings, delivery options, remote volunteering, and interactive participation to community programs rather than offering passive observation alone.
Community Connection: Social inclusion, homebound residents, accessible participation, and community belonging
