Community Action 363: Help Another Person Find Their Way to Contribute
The Idea: Help someone identify a form of community participation suited to their interests, skills, schedule, resources, abilities, and comfort level.
Why It Matters: People may want to contribute but feel uncertain about where to begin, which organizations are credible, or what kind of commitment they can manage.
Try It Today: Ask the person what causes interest them and share one verified volunteer, giving, learning, or community-participation opportunity.
Make It Work for You: Offer choices without pressure and let the person make their own decision. Provide accurate information about duties, time, costs, transportation, accessibility, training, screening, emotional demands, and organizational expectations. Do not register someone without permission, promise a position, disclose private information, or imply that donating money is the only meaningful form of contribution.
Take It Further: Attend an orientation together, introduce the person through an approved channel, help them compare several opportunities, or check in afterward without demanding continued participation.
