Community Action 242: Recognize the Contributions of Older Residents
The Idea: Acknowledge the knowledge, service, leadership, creativity, caregiving, cultural traditions, and community history contributed by older residents.
Why It Matters: Older adults often strengthen communities through decades of professional work, volunteering, family support, mentorship, civic participation, entrepreneurship, and preservation of local knowledge.
Try It Today: Thank an older resident for a specific contribution and ask whether they would be comfortable sharing more about it.
Make It Work for You: Recognize the person as an individual rather than treating age itself as an achievement or assuming that every older adult wants public attention. Verify names, dates, roles, and accomplishments before publication. Obtain permission before sharing stories, photographs, health information, family history, or contact details. Avoid patronizing language and do not overlook contributions made quietly or outside prominent institutions.
Take It Further: Develop an authorized oral-history project, appreciation event, article, exhibit, or intergenerational program that preserves older residents’ experiences in their own words.
Community Connection: Older-adult recognition, community history, intergenerational respect, and local leadership
