Community Action 240: Donate Mobility Equipment Through an Appropriate Program
The Idea: Donate usable wheelchairs, walkers, canes, crutches, shower chairs, or other mobility equipment through an organization equipped to inspect, clean, repair, match, and distribute it responsibly.
Why It Matters: Appropriate equipment may improve safety and independence, but damaged, unsanitary, incomplete, or poorly fitted devices can cause injury.
Try It Today: Contact a reputable medical-equipment reuse program, disability organization, healthcare nonprofit, senior-services agency, or authorized charitable provider to review its current acceptance rules.
Make It Work for You: Confirm which items are accepted and whether batteries, chargers, accessories, manuals, serial numbers, or proof of ownership are required. Clean equipment according to program instructions and disclose defects or missing parts. Do not leave equipment outside a facility without authorization, donate recalled items, or give a device directly to someone while claiming it is medically appropriate. Individual fitting may require a qualified professional.
