The Idea: Organize an inclusive gathering that thanks volunteers for their time, skills, reliability, and contributions.
Why It Matters: A well-planned appreciation event can strengthen relationships, encourage reflection, and help volunteers feel that their work is understood and valued.
Try It Today: Ask volunteers how they prefer to be recognized and select a format suited to the organization’s size, budget, culture, and policies.
Make It Work for You: Plan accessibility, dietary needs, transportation, timing, privacy, photographs, childcare, venue rules, and gift restrictions. Avoid ranking volunteers solely by hours, overlooking remote or behind-the-scenes work, or pressuring anyone to attend. Keep spending proportionate to the organization’s mission and disclose whether sponsors are involved. Appreciation should complement—not replace—training, supervision, safe conditions, reimbursement practices, and respectful treatment throughout the year.
