Community Action 345: Celebrate an Older Community Contributor
The Idea: Recognize an older adult whose knowledge, service, creativity, generosity, leadership, or long-term involvement has strengthened the community.
Why It Matters: Older residents may contribute valuable experience, institutional knowledge, mentorship, cultural traditions, caregiving, volunteer service, and historical perspective.
Try It Today: Ask the person how they would prefer to be thanked and whether they are comfortable with public recognition.
Make It Work for You: Avoid stereotypes about age, health, independence, technology, memory, retirement, or family circumstances. Do not disclose medical information, identify a residence or routine, or publish photographs and personal history without permission. Focus on the person’s actual contribution rather than treating age alone as an accomplishment. Ensure that any event or presentation is physically accessible and convenient.
Take It Further: Record an oral history with informed consent, invite the person to mentor others, recognize long-term service formally, or support intergenerational community programs.
Community Connection: Older adults, lifelong contribution, intergenerational learning, and community history
