Community Action 177: Encourage Diverse Community Leadership
The Idea: Help create fair opportunities for people with different backgrounds, ages, abilities, experiences, neighborhoods, and perspectives to participate in community leadership.
Why It Matters: Leadership that draws from a broad range of residents may identify overlooked needs, improve public trust, and produce more informed decisions.
Try It Today: Share an official application, nomination, advisory-board, volunteer, or leadership-development opportunity with qualified people who may not already know about it.
Make It Work for You: Focus on transparent criteria, accessible recruitment, appropriate support, and meaningful authority rather than symbolic representation. Do not pressure someone to serve, expect one person to represent an entire community, or select participants solely to create an appearance of diversity. Address barriers involving timing, transportation, childcare, disability access, language, and unfamiliar procedures.
Take It Further: Support mentorship, leadership training, accessible meetings, fair selection procedures, and regular evaluation of who participates and whose voices influence decisions.
Community Connection: Representative leadership, civic participation, fair opportunity, and community trust
