Community Action 222: Help Someone Arrange an Accessible Ride
The Idea: With permission, help an older adult or person with a disability arrange transportation suited to their mobility and accessibility needs.
Why It Matters: Complicated reservation systems, eligibility requirements, technology barriers, and limited service options can prevent people from reaching essential appointments and community activities.
Try It Today: Ask the person what assistance they want and help them contact an official paratransit, senior transportation, accessible taxi, rideshare, medical transportation, or community mobility program.
Make It Work for You: Let the rider control decisions and provide personal information directly whenever possible. Confirm pickup location, destination, time, fare, mobility-device accommodation, assistance level, return arrangements, and emergency contact procedures. Do not lift or transfer someone unless trained and authorized, share medical details unnecessarily, or guarantee that a vehicle will arrive on time.
