Community Action 346: Thank Someone Who Works Behind the Scenes
The Idea: Recognize a person whose essential work is often less visible than the public-facing parts of a program, organization, or event.
Why It Matters: Successful community efforts may depend on people handling setup, scheduling, registration, cleaning, transportation, technology, food service, records, translation, maintenance, safety, and follow-up.
Try It Today: Identify one behind-the-scenes contributor and send a specific message explaining what you noticed and valued.
Make It Work for You: Confirm the person’s correct name, role, and preferred form of recognition. Do not reveal confidential responsibilities, security arrangements, employment information, or private circumstances. Avoid implying that visible leaders deserve less appreciation; meaningful recognition can include everyone whose work contributed. Thanking someone should not substitute for fair compensation, safe working conditions, proper credit, or adequate staffing.
Take It Further: Recommend a team-wide recognition practice, credit contributors in approved materials, submit a formal commendation, or help reduce an overlooked workload.
