Community Action 322: Donate School Meals or Grocery Cards
The Idea: Help students and families access food through an authorized school meal fund, grocery assistance program, or nonprofit partner.
Why It Matters: Reliable access to nutritious food can support students’ health, attendance, concentration, learning, and participation in school activities.
Try It Today: Ask a school district, education foundation, family resource center, food bank, or youth-serving nonprofit about approved ways to contribute.
Make It Work for You: Follow the organization’s policies concerning donations, student privacy, meal accounts, gift cards, eligibility, and distribution. Grocery cards should be purchased and delivered through an accountable program when possible. Do not request the names of recipient students, photograph families, make assistance conditional, or distribute cards on school property without authorization. School meal rules and funding arrangements may change, so confirm the current need before organizing a collection.
Take It Further: Support weekend meal bags, summer food programs, school pantries, nutrition education, or transportation to authorized food-distribution locations.
Community Connection: Student nutrition, family food security, educational access, and dignified assistance
