Community Action 332: Research a Charity Before Donating
The Idea: Evaluate an organization’s identity, legitimacy, programs, governance, and fundraising practices before contributing.
Why It Matters: Basic research can help donors avoid fraud, understand how funds may be used, and support organizations whose work aligns with their intentions.
Try It Today: Confirm the charity’s legal name, official website, physical or mailing address, leadership, nonprofit status, recent reports, and secure donation channel.
Make It Work for You: Review program descriptions, financial disclosures, independent evaluations where available, donor restrictions, privacy policies, and fundraising costs in context. Be cautious of copied websites, high-pressure calls, unfamiliar payment links, personal accounts, gift cards, cryptocurrency demands, and names resembling well-known organizations. Nonprofit or tax-exempt status does not by itself prove effectiveness or guarantee that a contribution is deductible.
